Preventing Ingrown Toenails

There can be nothing more bothersome than an ingrown toenail. The pain can impact a person’s daily life, but something so painful can easily be prevented.

There are various steps a person can take to prevent an ingrown toenail. It is imperative to only cut toenails straight across. Be cautious not to cut the corner of the toenail or round off the nail. Nails cut too short can also become ingrown.

Wearing the appropriate fitting shoes can also prevent formation of ingrown toenails. Tight fitting shoes can squeeze the skin over the nail and pressure the nail to become ingrown. Shoes should have ample room in the toe box to prevent crowding of the toes.

When shopping for new shoes they should be tried on at the end of the day. Feet swell throughout the day and are at their largest size at the end of the day. By trying on new shoes towards the end of the day you can find a more accurate fit and prevent the development of ingrown toenails.

Some people are more prone to ingrown toenails than others. People who have flat feet or limited range of motion can have recurring ingrown toenails due to the inward pressure on the on the skin causing ingrown nails. This excessive pressure can promote the skin and nail plate to become ingrown from the abnormal skin and nail interface. Orthotics can be beneficial to correct that abnormal motion and can prevent ingrown nails for people who have flat feet or abnormal range of motion.

Highly active people and those who play sports should monitor their feet daily because of the trauma to their feet that could cause nails to become ingrown.
