Preventing Gout in Feet

Gout is a build of uric acid in the tissues with deposit of uric acid crystals in the joints. Limiting the amount of uric acid in one’s diet can help prevent gout.

Gout does not present immediately and typically is the end result of uric acid build up over the course of  several years. In between gouty attacks or periods of being symptom free the following will help prevent gout.

  • Limit over consumption of meats such as fish, beef, and poultry. Obtain protein from low fat dairy sources. Uric acid is the end result of the breakdown of meat products.
  • Limit alcohol consumption. Alcoholic beverages such as beer increase the risk of gouty attacks.
  • Stay well hydrated and drink plenty of fluids such as water. Avoid heavily sweetened drinks. Plenty of fluid will help flush and aid the body in ridding itself of excess uric acid.
  • Maintain a healthy weight and lose weight slowly because rapid weight loss can precipitate a gouty attack.
