Ingrown Toenail Overview

Toenail pain from an ingrown nail is a common struggle for many. Ingrown nails, or onychocryptosis, is defined as a toenail on either side or both sides of the toe that grows into the surrounding skin.  Most ingrown nails occur in the big toe and are often the result of improper trimming of toenails. Toenails are meant to be trimmed to appropriate length, straight across without rounded edges.

Other causes of an ingrown nails can be because of genetically curvy nails, improperly fitting shoes, fungal infections, and injuries to the nail or nails.

After the stage has been set or a toenail has been encourage to grow inward, the first symptom a person may experience is pain, followed by redness and swelling with possible infection if the nail stays ingrown for a long period of time.

Home remedies and treatments are among one of the leading causes for an ingrown to become infected and progress to severe infections. It is especially important for people with diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, and poor circulation to avoid trimming their nails and also to avoid treating possible ingrown toenails themselves. Mild toe infections in patients with diabetes and circulatory issues can quickly result in hospitalization and possible amputation.
