The constant formation and buildup of corns and calluses is a common and unsightly source of foot pain. Callus formation is the end result of excessive pressure on specific areas of the foot. Areas of the foot that are under constant pressure such as the ball of the foot, toes, and heel lead to an accumulation of dead skin cells that harden forming calluses and corns. There are different types of corns and calluses that form on the foot ranging from diffuse callus or hypertrophic skin formation to deep seated nucleated callus that causes deep intense pin point pain called intractable plantar keratosis.
Calluses and corns develop over bony prominences and serve as signs of an improperly functioning foot. People who suffer from foot deformities such as flat feet, high arch feet, hammer toes and other toe deformities commonly suffer from painful corns and calluses. High heels and improperly fitting shoes, along with the loss of the natural fat pad on the bottom of the foot due to aging all contribute to callus and corn build up.
Callus formation is the body’s natural defense mechanism for excessive pressure and friction it encounters. If you are currently experiencing painful corns and calluses, please call to make an appointment to see one of the doctors at Progressive Foot Care.
